I heard this on the radio this morning while taking my son to preschool, and I couldn't agree more. The host pointed out that this indicates that Thompson gets the new media landscape, which will be very helpful for him should he run. For me, I am very much looking for him to get into the race.
I think you can infer both ways, but the plain meaning of his words is that Castro stuck the guy in a mental institution and he's Moore's buddy. The secondary meaning for those of us who think Michael Moore is a jackass is that he should be put in a mental institution. Very clever, methinks.
Thompson very wittily pointed out what happens to dissenting journalists in countries that Moore likes. The inference is that Moore is a hypocrite to point to a mere investigation when his buddy Fidel is throwing journalists into mental hospital.
Placing dissenting voices in mental hospitals is old ploy of the Soviets. Fidel learned their lessons well.
I don't think Thompson was suggesting that Michael Moore belonged in a mental hospital. Moore has not only been free to, but has made a lot of money from, trashing the US and comparing it unfavorably to Cuba. I think Thompson was just pointing out that Moore might think about what might happen to him if the US took his advice and became more like Cuba.
I have to admit -- at first I was very suspicious about this homespun "none of the above" candidate. But the more I see of him the more I like him. God, we need someone leading this country that can put two intelligible sentences together and has a sense of humor. And is not embarrassed to smoke in public.
Brilliant indeed.

ReplyDeleteSeemed a bit mean, inferring at the end that Moore belongs in a mental institution? Or did Thompson mean something else?
ReplyDeleteBut I'm certainly glad to see a Republican point out hypocrisy rather than give respect to those who do not deserve it.
BTW, Giuliani's appeal is that he won't just take stuff from people. I'm pro-life but I understand why Republicans would vote for him.
