The Complexities of Keeping Thanksgiving in Ireland

After extending an invitation to a friend to join my family for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving meal, he inquired:

Seth, I’m unacquainted with the protocols of Thanksgiving. What is it right to bring to the table? Please don’t say “Me”.

To which, I replied:

Beers from these isles, or distilled spirits—single malt scotch, or gin—nothing more complex—or we have kosher problems. Don’t bring wine or liqueurs—even if kosher (because not everyone agrees what counts as kosher). That’s the answer because I am Jewish, not because it is Thanksgiving.

Some of my more religious American co-religionists don’t think turkey is kosher ... but that’s ok ... as they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving ab initio.
