Joe Gibbs.
The Redskins have sucked virtually the entire time since he left after winning yet another Super Bowl. Gibbs, on the other hand, went on to major success as a NASCAR team owner.
Daniel Snyder, the much disliked owner of the team in the post-Gibbs era, tried Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, and Steve Spurrier. Not much luck in any case, despite the fact that the latter two are all-time greats and Norv Turner has twice been a very successful offensive coordinator.
This season the breaks are all falling Washington's way. I conclude, in reverse Pat Robertson style, that the blessing of the Lord is upon Joe Gibbs and Dan Snyder was smart enough to hire him and get out of the way.
I'm not sure how to work this into a general morality tale, so I'll just offer these two local observations for what they're worth.
ReplyDelete(1) During the disappointments of the mediocre 2004-2005 season and the apparent collapse during the middle of this season, I heard not one word of grumbling about Joe Gibbs. This very cynical town finds it impossible to be cynical about St. Joe.
(2) Despite the fact that he lured Gibbs away from NASCAR and back to the NFL, Washington still hates Dan Snyder. A lot.
Let's win one for the Gibber.
ReplyDeleteKathy, I wrote this one just for you.
ReplyDeleteMan, can someone please explain to me the Giants' descent into massive suckitude? And the Bucs?! The only team that I was rooting for that weekend that didn't suck was the Patriots. What a weired weekend for football.
ReplyDeleteThe answer on the Giants is simple. You can stop them if you can stop Tiki. Plax Burress has big games, but is eminently shut-downable in the big games. Disappointed me, too.
