Everyone says Maryland is true blue, but it's really not. Baltimore and PG are minority heavy and Montgomery is full of old hippies. But Western Maryland, the Eastern Shore, and the southern counties between the Potomac and the Patuxent are old fashioned, traditional, and rural. They can go for a Democrat like Steny Hoyer or Paul Sarbanes out of habit, but are Republican in temperament. The only way Democrats win statewide is if they can hold both the Montgomery granola crunchers and the black vote in both Baltimore and PG. Michael Steele is from PG, he is very popular among the black middle class, especially the large number of black female business owners here. I'm not even sure Mfume, with his Baltimore grievance industry background, could peel these votes away from Steele. I know for certain that Ben Cardin, who is basically Steny Hoyer's less powerful, less hickish younger brother, won't have a chance here. And without both PG and Baltimore, the Democrat's sunk. Just ask Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.Kathy Hutchinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11851875819094837357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8776899.post-1157166520132911972006-09-01T23:08:00.000-04:002006-09-01T23:08:00.000-04:00I'd vote for the Democrat Ben Cardin.
