I think that's rather lower than its reputation in the previous two decades. www.filmsite.org says, "The Searchers (1956) is considered by many to be a true American masterpiece of filmmaking, and the best, most influential, and perhaps most-admired film of director John Ford." <I>The Searchers</I> also made <I>Time</I> magazine's Top 100 Movies of All Time list, which was much more difficult than making AFI's list because the <I>Time</I> compilation included a quite large number of foreign films.<BR/><BR/>All in all, I'd say <I>The Searchers</I> is in fact one of the most critically respected American films of all time, and certainly one of the top two or three Westerns most critics think of.—STKS.
