An Excellent Aphorism

Chicago Tribune sports columnist Sam Smith, a very talented and imaginative writer, came up with a classic bit of satire in his column of today. Here it is:

An unscientific survey, by the way, is usually where we make up the results. That differs from a scientific survey, in which professional pollsters make up the results.

Funny and true.

Imaginative does not even begin to describe Sam Smith. He has probably written over 100 columns on how the Bulls might obtain the services of Kevin Garnett. Most of those scenarios involve five-team deals, with players to be named later as well as an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

So true, Matt. I don't want to see Garnett on the Bulls, but Sam's proposed trade for Ray Allen is brilliant. He's an excellent writer, and such great fun to read. Sports is supposed to be something to enjoy watching, doing, and discussing, and Sam Smith, like Peter Vecsey, reminds us of that.
